Lying Southeast of the slopes of Table Mountain, within rich valleys and sweeping expanses of open lands, the Southern Suburbs group together, amongst others, sought-after residential neighbourhoods like Newlands, Claremont, Bishopscourt, Constantia, Wynberg, Tokai and Steenberg.
Separately, each of these neighbourhoods has a unique charm and feel, while together, they combine to provide a safe, suburban environment with a diversity of activities ranging from a fabled wine route and world class restaurants to art galleries and theatre experiences
There are a number of beautiful estates located throughout the Southern Suburbs, with the safety and security of estate living a strong lure for many families based in the area. Estates like Nieuwe Steenberg, Steenberg Estate, Silverhurst Estate, Silvertree Estate and Stonehurst all offering residents safe, secure living, while still providing a central location close to all the major necessities.
"The number one reason people are looking at estate living is for the security that they offer," agrees The Agency's Southern Suburbs area and estate specialist, Elle Hooper. "But for people who travel a lot, it is also a wonderful lock-and-go option."
Much like the area in which they are located, the estates of the Southern Suburbs all bring with them their own characteristics and benefits. From luxury, contemporary estates to established, family-friendly communities, estate living in the area boasts a number of drawcards.
Nieuwe Steenberg is a luxury residential estate located in the heart of the Constantiaberg Valley, Nieuwe Steenberg is idyllic living in the heart of one of Cape Town's most sought-after neighbourhoods. Luxury, contemporary and secure living in the heart of the Constantia Wine Route, it's small wonder that this gated community is so popular.
Established in Tokai in 2000, Silvertree Estate has since become one of the most sought-after residential estates in Cape Town. This beautiful estate provides homeowners with the safety of a secure estate and the convenience of being centrally located, with schools, shopping centres and entertainment close by. Located less-than 30 minutes from the Cape Town City Centre and Cape Town International Airport, residents at Silvertree Estate can enjoy suburban living, without the long-distance travel that often comes with it.
A mix of elegant villas, family homes and mansions influenced by local history, Silverhurst Estate in Constantia lies up against the slopes of the Steenberg Mountains and is a hop, skip and a jump away from the famed Constantia Wine Route, hiking - and MTB - trails, world class restaurants and a number of highly-rated schools, including Reddam House, which is also close by and a strong lure for families looking to shift to estate living in the suburbs.
Boasting one of the prime locations in the city, Stonehurst Estate lies cradled on the slopes of the Silvermine Mountains overlooking the Constantia Valley and False Bay. Family-friendly and secure, Stonehurst combines contemporary design with the natural environment (Stonehurst is located in the heart of the Cape Fynbos kingdom), making this estate perfect for nature lovers and those who want to be located in close proximity to all the urban amenities. It's the best of both worlds.
Estate living brings with it a number of benefits, none more so than ensuring the security of you and your family, while also allowing you to live in a close community. For many buyers, the lure of an estate is often based on location. And it's clear all the above offer incredible benefits in terms of space and lifestyle, whether it's the mountainous beauty of Stonehurst or the lush green valley of Constantia.
"In the Southern Suburbs, you have wonderful outdoor spaces," says Elle. "You have the mountain, the ocean is close by with Muizenberg, Kalk Bay and Noordhoek all within 10-15 minutes away. Then, you also have the lovely, lush greens of the Constantia Valley and the Constantia Wine Route - complete with its restaurants and the wine farms themselves - a big drawcard for living in the area."
But it's not just the area that is a strong lure for buyers. The estates themselves offer plenty to those looking to invest in estate living, says Elle.
"Generally the estates in the Southern Suburbs are larger, with the bigger estates having expansive walking paths within the estate areas themselves. Stonehurst, for example, has around 9km of walking and jogging paths, while the other estates are surrounded by beautiful greenbelts and forest areas."
Then, of course, there is the location.
"The great thing about the Southern Suburbs is that you can enjoy this beautiful, country-style living, while still being in close proximity to everything. You're only 15 minutes away from central Cape Town and 20 minutes from the airport. So, you have these wide-open spaces and beautiful views to enjoy and feel very much tucked away from the rush of city-life, yet you don't have to worry about any long commutes either."
When looking at buying property in an estate, remember to make sure it works for you, from location to the estate rules, they all offer something different.
