With increasing uncertainty - both economically and politically - being felt around the world, it is understandable, and more common than ever before, for local residents to start looking for a Plan B should things take a downward turn in their country of residence.
It is an unavoidable reality that while many do not want to leave their country of birth, they may be forced to if their living circumstances are negatively affected by things outside of their control. But while the decision may ultimately be taken out of their hands, it is worth noting that their destiny is still very much in their own control, with a number of programs operating globally that allow for investment in your future abroad.
It has become common for investors to look at countries such as Malta and Portugal as viable options, but surprisingly not many people know that the United States of America is just as accessible through the employment-based fifth preference category or EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa Program (EB-5).
The EB-5 was created in 1990 by the Immigration Act of the same year and provides a method for eligible Immigrant Investors to become lawful permanent residents (informally known as "green card" holders) by investing at least $500 000 ($900 000 after November 21, 2019) in a property venture in the United States.
The process, in theory is relatively simple, but it's best to work with an intermediary to help navigate the process, to ensure you cover all the correct steps and understand all your options in terms of where you invest.
It is worth noting that the possession of a temporary green card grants you the same rights as all other US citizens, meaning you can enjoy the same benefits almost immediately. For example, your children will be entitled to study in the US for the same costs as a citizen, resulting in large savings at a world class tertiary education that carries with it international credibility. There is also ease of travel and a high standard of living to consider, and for those with the means to take advantage of this opportunity, you would be well advised to consider it.
As an EB-5 investor you receive:
- The right to live, work, study or build a business anywhere in the United States
- Permanent Residency for your immediate family, including dependent children under the age of 21
- Access to the finest educational institutions, medical facilities and social programs - at the same cost as a United States citizen
- The opportunity to become a full United States citizen in only 5 years
- Visa-free travel to over 160 countries
The Agency Property Group understands the need for a Plan B and as such has partnered with a well-established company operating in this space. Our American partners have processed hundreds of applicants in recent years and guided a number of investors in the EB-5 visa, and they have enjoyed great success in doing so.
